To learn vocal projection properley without hurting yourself it is best to seek advice from a voice training specialist. Training the voice to be able to withstand more air pressure is your key to vocal projection.
Vocal projection is a strength of speaking or singing whereby the voice is used loudly and clearly. It is a technique employed to demand respect and attention, such as when a teacher is talking to the class, or simply just to be heard clearly, as an actor in a theatre. Vocal chord mass and resonance are key factors is voice projection, along with engaging the relevant muscles for support. In normal talking, one uses air from the top of the lungs and the muscles from the throat, a properly projected voice uses air right from the bottom of the lungs, and the diaphragm is used to push it out. Stance is also important, it is recommended to stand up straight with your feet shoulder width apart, and your upstage foot (right foot if right handed etc.)slightly forward. This improves your balance. This also improves your breathing. Voice projection is not really needed much in the studio, but it is for live singing when the singer is required to sing above a band or orchestra even with amplification. The most important vocal technique to remember is keeping the throat wide. It is not recommended to practice sustained voice projection until after a good vocal warm up.
