Lessons in Singing - Vocal Warm Up

Know Your Voice - Why Warm Up?

Vocal warm ups are very very important to do before any kind of singing, performance or vocal workout. During a singing lesson your teacher should always start with a vocal warm up. A vocal warm up is a good way of getting your mind and body focused and to start working on your voice tone. There are plenty of good warm up exercises to effectively improve the tone of your voice which can be done at home, in the car or during your singing lesson.

There are numerous ways you can warm up your voice. Some vocal exercises include sirens, fricatives, humming and spoken or yelled auditory cues such as 'Hi', 'Hello', 'Yeah', 'Oi', ;Ugh Oh'.... When you train your voice, you are contracting and relaxing very small muscles inside your vocal tract. Without a warm up you are more likely to strain your voice and worse still, not reach your full potential during the performance or workout.
