During voice lessons you will probably get to sing many different types of vocal exercises. Every vocal exercise has a benefit and during your voice lessons your singing teacher should explain them to you. Some exercises are for extending your singing range, others are for helping to blend your break, some improve resonance and some develop vocal flexibility.
Your body is your instrument. This means that you will become a vocal athlete and accomplished at singing using your whole body, not just your throat. You will develop an awareness of the co-ordination of the muscles inside your throat so that you can sing higher safely and with ease. You will develop an awareness of the resonating chambers inside you so that you can literally sing with you body. You will develop an awareness of the different types of voice tones that you can make which will give you more variety in your sound. You will develop an awareness of the need to look after your body so that you don’t push it too hard. You will develop an enhanced awareness of sound, pitch and harmony so that you will always sing with accuracy and you’ll be able to improvise better.
